Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. Murray State

APSU vs. Murray State

Post-Game Notes

  • Austin Peay falls to 0-6 overall/0-3 in the OVC on the season. They now have lost 11 straight, dating back to the 2014 season.
  • The loss was APSU's 35th straight on the road, extending the longest Division I road losing streak.
  • The 0-6 start assures the Governors of their eighth straight losing season.
  • Quarterback Trey Taylor passed for 102 in the first half against the Racers on 10-of-18 passing; he had just 41 total against Eastern Illinois the previous week. He finished with 104 yards against the Racers.
  • After playing sparingly in the previous two weeks, freshman running back Taye Davis had 36 first-half yards, including the Govs' only TD (six yards) against Murray State. He finished with 63 yards on 13 attempts against the Racers.
  • Cornerback Roderick Owens led the Governors with eight first-half tackles while two other secondary members—Malik Boynton and Damien Whitfield—each had six. The only non-secondary member who had six or stops was linebacker Benedict Lous. Owens finished with 11 tackles, Whitfield 10 and Boynton nine while linebackers Louis and Antonio Turner also had nine apiece.
  • In his first action since Sept. 13, 2014 in Week 2 versus Chattanooga, redshirt junior quarterback Timarious Mitchell led the Governors on a third-quarter scoring drive, culminating with a 10-yard TD pass to Jared Beard. Mitchell completed both pass attempts on the drive, including a fourth-down toss to keep drive going.
  • For the second straight week sophomore running back Kendall Morris broke a long TD run. After scoring against Eastern Illinois on a 74-yard run, he chalked up a 62-yard TD jaunt against Murray State.
  • For the second straight week running back Kendall Morris put together a 100-yard rushing performance. After rushing for 141 yards against EIU, he had 136 yards on 15 carries against the Racers. The last Gov back to have consecutive 100-yard games was Otis Gerron, who had 196 yards against Mercer (Oct. 11) and 134 against Murray State (Oct. 18).
  • In two games against Murray State, sophomore wide receiver Jared Beard has 14 receptions for 185 yards and four TDs. He had 97 yards receiving on seven catches against the Racers, Saturday, including a 10-yard TD catch.
  • Quarterback Trey Taylor punted twice in short formation and both were downed inside the 20-yard line. He now has punted five times this season, with four landing inside the 20.
  • Senior punter Evan Toby enjoyed his season's best game from a yardage standpoint against the Racers. He punted four times for a 45.0 average, including two inside the 20 and one 51 yarder. His best previous effort was a 42.9 average against Southern Miss.
  • APSU was credited with a pair of quarterback sacks. In his first career start, freshman Branden Johnson tallied a three-yard first-half sack plus a second tackle for loss. The other quarterback sack came from linebacker Antonio Turner.  It was the first time the Govs had generated multiple single-game quarterback sacks since they had two against Southeast Missouri, Nov. 8, 2014.
  • Junior linebacker Antonio Turner not only had nine tackles and a quarterback sack, he as well finished with a total of 2.5 tackles for loss, totaling seven yards.
  • APSU allowed 526 total yards to Murray State, broken down almost equally between pass (286 yards) and rush (240).
  • Murray State started three drives inside APSU territory, meaning opponents now have started 17 times on the Govs' side of the 50-yard line this season. The Racers' average field position start was their own 35-yard line compared to APSU's average being from its own 23. APSU average field-position start entering the game was its own 27-yard line.
  • Murray State scored twice in the last four minutes of the first half. APSU now has been outscored 48-0 in the last four minutes of the first half covering the last four contests.
  • The 370 yards total offense was the most by the Govs this season, surpassing the 309 last week against Eastern Illinois.
  • The 526 yards total offense permitted was the fourth time this season the Govs have allowed 500 or more yards.
