Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. Jacksonville State

Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. Jacksonville State

  • APSU fell to 0-8 overall, 0-5 in the OVC this season while No. 1/2 Jacksonville State improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the OVC.
  • The loss drops Austin Peay to 6-17-3 all-time in the series.
  • Austin Peay has now lost nine straight to Jacksonville State since rejoining the OVC in 2007, although the 27 points permitted were the fewest allowed during that timeframe.
  • The loss drops APSU to 28-42-1 all-time in homecoming contests, including the last seven straight.
  • APSU now owns a 13-game losing streak, the longest in FCS.
  • This was the first time since the Governors lost to Middle Tennessee, 17-14, Oct. 26, 1985, they faced the No. 1 1AA/FCS team in the country.
  • Austin Peay was held to -2 yards total offense in the first half, including -17 rushing, by Jacksonville State.  Meanwhile, JSU rolled up 330 yards.
  • The Governors achieved just one first down in the first half compared to 19 for JSU.
  • When JSU quarterback Eli Jenkins scored from one-yard with 32.2 seconds left in the first half, it represented the 63rd points scored in the opening half's final four minutes in the last six games. In fact, APSU has been outscored 63-0 during those 24 minutes.
  • With JSU offense on the field for 18:10 in the first half, the Govs had four players with five or more tackles, including six by linebacker Adam Noble and five each by linebacker Antonio Turner and safeties Malik Boynton and Damien Whitfield.
  • Jacksonville State didn't punt for the first time until 12:50 left in the third quarter.
  • When APSU's defense held JSU without a score in the third period, it snapped a streak of 13 straight quarters of scoring by the Gamecocks.
  • After gaining just one first down in the first half, the Govs rolled up four on their second possession of the second half, a possession that resulted in a touchdown.
  • When Trey Taylor connected with Jared Beard with a five-yard fourth-down TD pass it was the third straight contest the sophomore wideout caught a touchdown. The last time APSU had a receiver with at least three consecutive games was in 2012 when Devin Stark ended his senior season with four straight contests with a receiving TD.
  • Sophomore Jared Beard has four of the Govs' six TD passes this season. In fact, Beard owns eight touchdown receptions over his two-season career.
  • The Govs finished with 82 total yards, making it the first time since Nov. 9, 2013 against Tennessee State (92 yards) when they were held to fewer than 100 yards total offense. It also was the first time in program history that JSU held an opponent to fewer than 100 yards total offense.
  • The Govs finished the game being outgained 427-82 yards total offense, including a 25-7 advantage in first downs.
  • Trey Taylor finished 13 of 24 passes for 60 yards against JSU. It was the fifth time the Govs' starting quarterback finished with fewer than 100 yards passing this season.
  • JSU came in leading the OVC and ranking third in the nation in interceptions (11). The Govs failed to throw an interception against the Gamecocks.
  • Although JSU was playing mostly reserves in the second half, APSU's defense held the nation's No. 1 team scoreless over the final 30 minutes.
  • Austin Peay converted just 2-of-15 third-down attempts (13 percent) against JSU and now has converted 30-of-131 (22.9 percent) for the season. Meanwhile, the opposition has converted 65-of-125 (52 percent) on the season.
  • Junior safety Devon Jones ending up leading the Govs tacklers with 11, the second time this season he has led the Govs in stops and reached double figures in doing so. Fellow safeties Malik Boynton and Damien Whitfield finished with nine and eight tackles, respectively.
  • Sophomore linebacker Zach Stuart and senior defensive end Corey Teague each finished with 2.5 tackles for loss. Stuart also had a fumble recovery.
  • Senior linebacker Adam Noble led the Govs in unassisted tackles with five--seven total--and also had a quarterback hurry.
  • Junior cornerback Roderick Owens' third-quarter interception was his second this season fifth over the last two seasons—and his career. Owens, who had four unassisted tackles on the game, also forced a fumble.
  • Junior cornerback Donovan Jackson was not credited with a tackle against JSU but did have two pass break ups.
