Austin Peay State University Athletics

Football By Colby Wilson

Postgame Notes: Austin Peay at Tennessee Tech

  • Austin Peay finishes the regular season 0-11, the second time in three seasons and sixth time in the program's history that the Governors have finished winless in a season.
  • The Govs extend the nation's longest road losing streak (to 37 games) and longest overall losing streak (16 games) with the loss.
  • For the second week in a row, Austin Peay gained 58 total offensive yards in the second half.
  • Jared Beard's hauled in two touchdown receptions, his second career multi-score game. His 110 receiving yards make him the first Gov to break the century mark since Wesley Thomas' 141-yard day to close the 2014 season against Tennessee Tech—Beard finishes 2015 with the four best receiving performances (by yards) of any Gov. And in concluding his season with 576 receiving yards, he's the first Gov to break the 500-yard receiving mark since Devin Stark (2012).
  • After having no Governors account for 30 or more points in a season since 2012, Beard (36) and Kendall Morris (30) broke that barrier with their performances Saturday.
  • With his season-best 208 yards passing, Taylor finishes 2015 with 1,058 yards passing—the first Governor since 2012 (Jake Ryan) to pass for 1,000 yards a season. It's the first time a Governor threw for 200 or more yards since he threw for 224 last season against the Golden Eagles.
  • With his 10th start, Taylor became just the second Governor (Jake Ryan, 2012) to start 10 or more games at quarterback in a single season since 2008.
  • In his final outing as a Gov, Adam Noble posted his 200th career tackle.
  • Junior Damien Whitfield also earned his 150th career tackle.
  • Thomas had another nice day against Tennessee Tech, posting season-highs in receptions (seven) and yards (63), surpassing the 500-yard mark for his career.
  • Logan Birchfield's 35-yard field goal equaled his career-long.
  • Austin Peay has now lost nine straight contests tied into the series for the Sergeant Alvin C. York Trophy.
  • Junior Roderick Owens came off the edge to record his first career sack.
  • In holding Tennessee Tech to 2-for-11 on third down, Austin Peay got its third-down defense percentage under 50 percent (48.4 percent, 78-of-161) on the season.
  • Nobody on the Austin Peay sideline will be sorry to see Tennessee Tech's Ladarius Vanlier depart. The Nashville native posted 272 all-purpose yards on the day (131 rushing, 74 receiving, 67 on returns) on 16 total touches—the second year in a row Vanlier has averaged better than 10 yards per touch. He's posted 150 or more all-purpose yards in three of his four contests against Austin Peay and finishes his career with 642 all-purpose yards (315 rushing, 229 receiving, 98 return) and five touchdowns—four coming in this year's meeting.
  • For the first time since the season's third game, at Vanderbilt, Austin Peay did not allow a point in the final four minutes of the first half.
  • Austin Peay's 5-for-18 showing on third down conversions sees them finish the season at 24.4 percent (41-for-168) on third down—the lowest mark since 2000.
