Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. UT Martin

Post-Game Notes

  • Austin Peay became the first team in OVC history to win the league tourney from the No. 8 seed.
  • The tourney championship was APSU's fifth league tourney title, the fourth under Dave Loos.
  • This was APSU's 17th OVC tourney championship appearance. It was their first appearance since 2009 and the first title since 2008.
  • This was APSU's third championship claimed in Municipal Auditorium, putting the Govs 15-7 all-time in Municipal.
  • The Governors are now 42-33 all-time in the OVC tourney.
  • The Govs' title easily could have been called the Battle of Tennessee. All four wins—Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Belmont and UT Martin came against universities from the Volunteer State.
  • The Govs handed head coach Dave Loos a birthday present…he turned 69, Saturday.
  • Chris Horton, who led the Governors the tourney's first three nights but suffered a first-half ankle sprain against UT Martin, was named tourney most valuable player. He joins Darryl Bedford (1987), Keith Rawls (1989), Bubba Wells (1996), Josh Lewis (003) and Todd Babington (2008) as Govs' tourney MVPs.
  • Joining Horton on the OVC all-tourney team were teammates Josh Robinson and Jared Savage along with Belmont's Evan Bradds and UT Martin's Twymond Howard.
  • The Governors converted 16 three pointers, breaking the school record of 15, set by the Govs against Morehead State (1990-91) and reset in twice in 1996-97 against Southeast Missouri and UT Martin.
  • Austin Peay shot 14 of 24 (58.3 percent in the second half). During the four-game run the Governors shot a combined 59 of 97 (61 percent) in the second halves of those contests.
  • Freshman guard Jared Savage, who made 8-of-14 threes against UT Martin, was 19 of 34 from three-point range in the tourney. After setting a personal best with 21 points against Belmont, he upped the ante against UT Martin with 24. He also grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.
  • Although he went only 4-of-14 from the floor, point guard Josh Robinson scored 20 points for a second straight night by going 10-of-12 at the free-throw line. He made six of them over the final 2:22, including on a trio after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
  • Austin Peay ended the game with a 35-34 rebounding edge, meaning the Governors owned the rebounding advantage in all four OVC tourney games.
  • The Governors are now 6-0 since Josh Robinson was moved to the point- from the two-guard position and Jared Savage was inserted into the lineup.
  • Reserve guard John Murry, who played sparingly since mid-January, reemerged in the OVC tournament. He scored no less than six points in the four contests, highlighted by his 11-point effort in the title game. He knocked down a trio of three pointers, including back-to-back threes late in the first half.
  • Head coach Dave Loos won his first OVC tourney title in 1996 with Jermaine Savage, who later was elected to the APSU Athletic Hall of Fame, as one of its stars. This season the Governors won with Jared Savage, the son of Jermaine, as one of the integral parts of the club. Also on both teams were a pair of Ivorys—Willie was on the 1996 season while son Tre' is a member of this year's title team.
  • The Governors are now 4-0 in March.
  • The Governors are now 3-0 all-time against UT Martin in the OVC tournament.
  • The sixth-straight win added to APSU's season-long winning streak. As a result, the Govs moved past the .500 mark (18-17) for the first time this season.
