Danny Odums served as point guard during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons – both ending in NCAA tournament berths. The Brooklyn, NY native was recruited from the New York playgrounds along with James “Fly” Williams as the Peaymania Era began. Odums served as the ignition to the club both offensively and defensively. In fact, his numbers belie his true value. As a freshman, he earned All-OVC honorable mention for a team that beat favored Jacksonville in the NCAA Mideast Regional and lost a heart-breaking 106-100 overtime decision to Kentucky. Odums averaged 10.1 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. His 50.2 percent field goal percentage ranked ninth in the OVC. He had a season-best 26 points and 12 assists. In 1973-74, Odums earned All-OVC after averaging 12.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game for a team that lost to Notre Dame in the NCAA Mideast Regional. His 50.4 percent shooting led all Govs’ starters. Unfortunately, a conference-wide error in entrance requirements cut short Odums’ career, forcing him to transfer after his sophomore season. He died of a brain aneurysm on July 1, 1995.
