Isabel Canedo-Reagan had a tremendous impact on Austin Peay volleyball. When the Bolivia native transferred to Austin Peay from Miami Dade Community College in 1991, she helped vault the Lady Govs to OVC prominence.
The Lady Govs stunned the league with the 1991 OVC tourney championship, becoming the first non-Kentucky team to win the crown and the second Lady Govs program to win a league title. Canedo set APSU’s record for kills that season with 477 as she was named not only first-team All-OVC but also league “Player of the Year” and OVC tourney most valuable player as well.
In 1992, she helped lead the Lady Govs to their first-ever OVC regular-season title with a 15-1 mark and repeated as a first-team All-OVC and OVC all-tourney selection.
Canedo not only owns the mark for single-season kills but she is second as well with 438 in 1992. Despite playing just two APSU seasons, she still ranks fifth (915) career-wise in that category and is seventh in career kill percentage (.222). However, Canedo was more than an offensive player—she also owns the fourth-best mark for single-season digs with 529 (1992).
As talented as she was as a player, she was equally so off the court. She was named third-team GTE Academic All-America volleyball team in 1992—becoming the first female APSU athlete to earn national GTE Academic honors. She also became APSU’s first-ever woman to earn the OVC Scholar-Athlete Award.
As a result of her efforts both on and off the field, Canedo was named the 1992-93 Joy Award recipient as Austin Peay’s most valuable senior athlete. She later was named Austin Peay’s 1993 NCAA Woman of the Year.
She received a bachelor’s degree in medical technology in 1993 and later returned to school to receive a bachelor’s in nursing in 1998.
