A graduate of Isaac Litton High in Nashville, Smith became the first spring sports athlete in Governor history to win the coveted Joy Award in 1965. A first-team All-American choice in 1968 when he finished runner-up in NCAA College Division competition with a school record 72-hole total of 287, he went on to finish in the top 32 in NCAA University Division play. He became only one of three golfers to win the Tennessee Intercollegiate twice (1966, 1968), and he was named to the TIC All State team during all four years of his play. In 1967 he set the school nine-hole record with a 31 in the NCAA tournament. He was an All-OVC selection in 1966; led his team to a four-year 43-14-4 match record; holds the APSU single-season stroke average mark with a 72.5 in 1968; and has the second-best career stroke average of 74.65. Smith has won the state amateur, the Clarksville Country Club championship the last nine years, but he gained his most notoriety in 1969 when he made the Guinness Book of Records by setting the world’s record with nine consecutive birdies en route to an 11-under-par 59 and the Capital City Golf Association title in Nashville. An accounting major and economics minor, Jim is a public accountant with Lewis and Smith in Clarksville.
