Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. UT Martin

  • With the 37-7 loss to UT Martin, Austin Peay has now lost 29 straight road games.
  • APSU now has lost seven straight to UT Martin.
  • The Govs are now 0-1 in Sgt. York Trophy games this season. UT Martin clinched the Sgt. York Trophy (3-0), a quadrangular series between the four Ohio Valley Conference Tennessee teams.
  • APSU finished the game with only 170 offensive yards, compared to 496 for UT Martin. The Govs had just 79 passing yards after finishing with 201 last week against Murray State.
  • Through eight games, Austin Peay still has not attempted a field goal.
  • The Govs played the second half without Otis Gerron (head), Mickey Macius (thumb) and Jared Beard (knee), the offensive trio that played key roles in last week's Murray State win.
  • APSU utilized three quarterbacks against UT Martin in the loss. Mickey Macius started but a thumb injury created issues with his ability to deliver the football. He was replaced by fellow freshman Darrien Boone, who missed last week's game with a knee injury. Junior Trey Taylor, who started the season opener against Memphis, also played.
  • In only his second kick return, freshman Malik Boynton nearly returned a late second-quarter kickoff for a score. Only a stumble while tight-roping along the Govs' sideline prevented him from scoring—it still resulted in a 62-yard return.
  • The 43-yard fourth-quarter TD reception by Wesley Thomas was the first by the freshman. It also was quarterback Darrien Boone's first TD pass since the Chattanooga game.
  • With his first quarter punt against UT Martin, Ben Campbell broke the tie he shared with J.P. Hogan (259) for total career APSU punts. He now has 267 career punts.
  • With eight more punts against UT Martin, Ben Campbell now has 71 on the season with four games remaining. He set APSU's record for punts with 87 a year ago. Campbell already owns APSU's mark for career punts and punt yardage.
  • Campbell finished the game averaging 38.9 yards per punt, with one of the punts being downed at the two-yard line and another at the one.
  • For the second straight game, junior linebacker Adam Noble led the Govs in tackles. He finished with 10, also the second straight game with double-digit tackles. Now Noble is tied for second on the team in tackles with 49, two behind fellow linebacker Antonio Turner.
  • Senior cornerback Montez Carlton recorded his season's first interception—his career's third—early in the third period and returned it 38 yards. It was the first interception by a Gov with a name other than Roderick Owens, who had APSU's first three.
  • After converting 6-of-16 third-down opportunities against Murray State, the Governors were just 2-of-13 against UT Martin.
