Head coach Kirby Cannon's postgame quotes following the Govs loss to Eastern Kentucky, Saturday:
About the Govs performance on the defensive side of the ball in the first half:
I was happy with the first half other than the jump ball at the end. That play was a dagger to end the half. We had guys in position just got out-performed on that play. They took all the momentum going into the half. I think we are improving on defense. We were much better in our blitz game tonight. A lot of good things on the defensive side.
What the Govs need to do on the offensive side to find some consistency?
Offensive line-wise right now are just not good enough. We are not having very good quarterback play. This on a night we really needed some offensive production.
About Dy'Shawn Mobley's play:
I feel like we somewhat shut their running back down. We really made him work for what he got tonight. I just don't think you can play well enough without getting some major turnovers and that's one thing Eastern Kentucky doesn't do is turn the ball over.
Defensive spark tonight:
We have good team chemistry on defense right now due to some success. I wanted to run a fake punt tonight to get things going. We practiced it all week, but I don't think we had under a 4th and 10 all night. We have got to find a way to be productive on offense.
About the start of Second Half:
Big play for them coming out of the half to return it all the way down to the red zone. You have to take some chances on the defensive side, but it's hard to do when your back's against the wall like that.
About Julian Franklin's play tonight:
I was very happy with Julian's play tonight. He is a hard worker and runs the ball hard. He is one of those guys on the team that everybody likes. It's always good to see guys like Julian to go out there and do well.
Final Thoughts:
We are playing a team we can beat next week in Mercer. They have won a couple of games but not against the competition that we are. Other than Jacksonville State, I feel we have played the toughest part of our schedule.
