CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University men's tennis team will travel to Central Alabama Community
College this weekend for the first matches of their fall season. APSU will be the only Division I team participating in the
Friday, Saturday and Sunday individual tournament.
Head Coach Brian Surface expects his team to play well this weekend. "It will be a good experience for them," he
said. "We'll use this as a warm-up tournament before traveling to Middle Tennesee next weekend."
Members of this year's team include two Brazilians, Rodrigo Borges and Joao Pinho, both freshmen, sophomore
Wesleigh Pancho, and freshmen Michael Oats and Andrew Naidu, all from England, and junior Brian Koch and
sophomore Ben Griffy, both natives of Clarksville.
When asked who he expects to lead this team, Surface laughed and replied, "That's a good question. Poncho is
returning. He played a lot last year and should be one of our leaders. Oats could be a leader of the team. Although he
is a freshman, he has experience and knows how to get things done.
"I am very much pleased with this year's team over last year's team. We have a lot more depth. We're also young,
but I see a bright future. The newcomers are all playing well and adjusting fine."
This season will mark the second year for Surface to coach Governors tennis. This will be his fifth season coaching
and third one as a head coach.
