CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University's softball team (5-15) will play host to Lipscomb University (9-7),
1 p.m., Thursday, for doubleheader action.
Beginning at noon, however, the Lady Govs and the Lady Bisons will hit the field to finish the second of the Feb. 15
doubleheader, which was suspended in the fifth inning due to darkness. Austin Peay leads the game, 2-1.
During the teams' first meeting this season, APSU dropped a 4-3 decision to Lipscomb. With two outs in the bottom of the
eighth inning, and the game tied at 3-3, a Lady Govs' error allowed Lipscomb to score the game-winning run.
"This is going to be a good match-up," head coach Jim Perrin said. "Last time we played Lipscomb, we were up 3-2 and a
couple of mistakes late in the game hurt us. It should be a pretty even battle."
The Lady Govs are coming off two losses to the University of Tennessee, who is ranked fourth nationally. APSU was shut out
in both games, 9-0 and 13-0, and was limited to four hits on the day.
"I think we had bitten off a little more than we could chew," Perrin said. "Eventually, I'd like to play some of the top teams in
the nation, but right now our program is not ready to compete at that level. The Lipscomb match-up will be good for us and
should be a good game."
Perrin said the Lady Govs' focus will be on improving their offensive performance, and they will try to cut down on walks and
errors. Because APSU is playing two and one half games, all four of the Lady Govs' pitchers should see action.
"I also am looking for
Jennifer Simpkins to do well," Perrin said. "She's been playing extremely well lately and has been
doing a nice job for us.
Taylor Newberry has also come on and has been hitting well in practice, so we'll look for her to step up
for us."
