CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Austin Peay State University men's tennis program announced the signing of
Clarksville native Doug Mitchem, Thursday. Mitchem, of Clarksville High, is the first signee under
head coach Ed Dickson.
Mitchem, who is originally from Morgantown, W.V., will be a familiar face in the fall to Dickson. The
two were formerly acquainted in West Virginia when Mitchem played for Dickson in the junior tennis
program.
When Dickson relocated to Austin Peay, he continued to follow Mitchem's career and watched him
mature on the court.
"Doug is a very intelligent player," said Dickson. "Even at a young age, he had a very good
understanding of the game."
Mitchem has played well since his arrival in Clarksville, as a 2004 AAA state quarterfinalist and
picking up all-midstate second-team honors. He also won the 2005 Hendersonville Invitational singles
and doubles competition.
"He's excited about playing tennis," said Dickson. "It's great to have a Clarksville kid playing with us.
"I want to get the word out to the local players that anyone can have a chance to play D-1 college
tennis. I want to give them a chance to earn scholarships and playing time at a higher level."
