CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? After a long fall preseason, Austin Peay State University women's track and field team will
finally have a chance to test themselves at Southern Illinois' Fast Start Invitational, Friday, in Carbondale, Ill. The meet
begins at noon, lasting until late Friday evening.
Teams competing include Ohio Valley Conference members Murray State and Southeast Missouri, along with
Louisville, Arkansas State and host Southern Illinois.
"We'll see what we can do in a competitive situation with plenty of solid teams," head coach Doug Molnar said. "We
are expecting them to go out and be competitive in each and every event."
The Lady Govs are looking for strong results in the jumps and long sprints. The middle and long distance runners,
however, will not be participating due to a lengthy cross-country season according to Molnar.
"We're giving them a break after the long season," Molnar said of the distance runners. "They'll get back into the swing
of things after the Christmas break."
Junior Leeann White leads a proficient group of Lady Govs jumpers. Joining White are four freshmen jumpers: pole
vaulters Molly Bartkiewicz and Carrie Burggraf along with high jumpers Amanda McCoy and Julie Wood. Several Lady
Govs freshmen will compete in the sprints as well, with Burggraf, Jessica Dixon and Esther Jackson running the 60
meters, India Allen running the 200 meters, and Wood running the 400 meters.
White will also compete in the 200-meter run and the 4 x 400-meter relay. Allen, Junior Danja Yates and freshman
Amanda McCoy will run the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Tameka Southern will join Wood running the 400 meters.
Sophomore Jen Pond will be the only Lady Govs thrower, competing in the shot put.
"This meet is an opportunity for our sprinters, jumpers and throwers to test themselves," Molnar said. "We'll be strong
in the jumps and long sprints behind a talented quartet of freshmen. We're looking forward to getting the season
underway."
