CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's track and field head coach Doug Molnar is more than ready to
get the outdoor season started. With senior Sherlonda Johnson along with sophomore Leeann White traveling to the Alex
Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame for last-chance qualifying for the indoor national championships, the rest of Austin
Peay's track and field team will stay home for the APSU Duals, Friday, at Governors Stadium.
Lady Govs assistant coach Christina Webb will be accompanying Johnson ? the Ohio Valley Conference's Female
Field Athlete of the Year ? and White to compete in the long jump.
"There are only a few last chance meets across the country and everybody that has a shot at qualifying will be there,"
said Molnar. "This will be the first time all year that Sherlonda has really been pushed. Sherlonda will be looking for that
elusive big jump to get her nationals.
"Looking at the NCAA season-best list, she'll need to jump about 20-4 or so. She's jumped over 20-1 a couple of
times this year and just needs a few more. Leeann White will accompany Sherlonda and, hopefully, we can get her closer
to the 20 foot mark as well."
With Johnson and White away, the Lady Govs will look to claim its second-straight first-place finish at their own APSU
Duals. The meet ? which will consist of the host Lady Govs along with OVC member Tennessee Tech, Lipscomb and
Belmont ? will be in an unusual format, with all events being conducted in an hour and a half.
"It's a nice way to get the season going. We won this meet a year ago and, hopefully, we can do that again this year,"
said Molnar. "It will be tough without Leeann and Sherlonda plus we have a number of people out with the flu so we'll have
to get after it on Friday.
Along with the women's events, there will also be three men's events ? the 100-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and a
5k.
"Josh Yeckering, Tim Hall and Ryne Sexton have had a good couple of weeks of practice," said Molnar. "We'll see
what they can do in the 5k. It should be fun."
