CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.-- Austin Peay State University has announced it has extended the contract of
head football coach Carroll McCray though the 2008 season.
The three-year extension takes place as McCray leads the Governors football program from non-
scholarship back to scholarship football in 2006 before returning to the Ohio Valley Conference in 2007.
"We have someone who not only really knows the game but know how to teach it as well," APSU
Athletics Director Dave Loos said. "Coach McCray has been able to put together a solid coaching staff
that reflects those same abilities.
"He is a great role model for our student-athletes. He has the best interests of our players upper
most in his mind?he will tell student-athletes what they need to hear and not necessarily what they want to
hear.
"Carroll also has a good game plan on our re-entry into scholarship football this coming season and
then back into the OVC in 2007."
McCray recently completed his third season as Austin Peay's head man. He became APSU's 16th
head coach, Jan. 20, 2003, replacing Bill Schmitz. .
"We as the McCray family and we as a football family?our coaching staff?are appreciative of the
confidence that Dr. (Sherry) Hoppe (APSU president) and Coach Loos have in us in our transition from a
I-AA independent back to the OVC," McCray said. "The extension of the contract will give us time to move
forward and evaluate our football team as we prepare for our transition year, plus continue to recruit solid
classes that can compete and win in the OVC.
"We certainly have a lot of things we need to do and things we need to improve but we are confident
we can do so.
We are humbled and appreciative of the opportunity they have provided us along with that confidence
they have shown in us as a staff."
Prior to his hiring as Austin Peay's head football coach, he apprenticed for the job by serving as an
assistant for 14 seasons at the Division I-A/I-AA level. In fact, he came to APSU after serving two
seasons as an assistant at Mississippi State.
