CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Western Kentucky to compete in this year's Old Timer's Classic Saturday, Sept. 15, at Keriakes Park in Bowling Green. The men will race at 10 a.m., followed by the women's race at 10:45.
"We'll see some familiar foes in this race," said head coach Doug Molnar. "In addition to host Western Kentucky and Kentucky, Ohio Valley Conference-defending champion Eastern Kentucky will be competing, along with OVC rivals Murray State, Tennessee-Martin, and Tennessee Tech.
"The men will look to improve on their seventh-place finish two weeks ago at the Belmont Opener," said Molnar. "Tim Hall looked strong in that meet, finishing in 12th place. Ryne Sexton will try to keep pace with him, while Lukas Siska, Antonio Diaz, Jordan Payne and John Newlin will push each other for the 3-5 positions."
The Old Timer's Classic also will mark the women's first meet of the season. Junior Bertha Castillo, who sat out last season after transferring, ran well in the long distance events in the spring, breaking several Austin Peay records along the way. Also returning will be a second-team all-OVC performer from last season, junior Anna-Claire Raines. Junior Melissa Nobbs and freshman Brooke Denny will also be expected to perform well in the first meet of the season, with sophomores Breonna Brown, Kate Gauf, and Tracee Gruskiewicz vying for the fifth spot.
"Castillo is always a serious threat when she goes into a meet," said Molnar. "Raines and Nobbs should be close to the front of the pack, and Denny could be a threat. From the group of Brown, Gauf, and Gruskiewicz someone will need to emerge to claim the fifth spot."
