CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.-- Still seeking that elusive first win, Austin Peay's football team will play host to Tennessee Tech. 6 p.m., Saturday in Governors Stadium. It's homecoming, with the theme: Let the Good Times Roll!
The Governors enter the contest with a 0-7 overall record, including 0-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Tennessee Tech. after opening the season with a 3-2 mark, has lost three straight. and stands 1-3 in the OVC. This also is a Sergeant York Trophy contest.
This marks the return of former Governors coach Watson Brown (1979-80) to Clarksville and Austin Peay. He will be coaching against his former longtime assistant Rick Christophel. The two began that association at APSU.
The Governors are coming off a 37-34 defeat at Tennessee State last weekend that saw running back Theo Townsend rush for 150 ya
rds, APSU's first 100-yard rushing performance this season. Quarterback
T.C. Jennings got off to a quick start by completing his first eight passes.
Tennessee Tech, meanwhile, dropped a 35-7 decision to UT Martin last week. Junior quarterback Lee Sweeney leads Tech. He has completed 106 of 177 passes for 1008 yards and five TDs. His favorite wide receiver is freshman Tim Benford, who has 43 catches for 504 yards.
The Golden Eagles aos feature the multi-dimensional running back Henry Sailes, who has 43 catches for 243 yards in addition to 62 carries for 321 yards rushing and four TDs. He also averages 29.4 yards per kick return. Backing him up is Cedric Wilkerson, the Clarksville native, who had 75 yards rushing against UT Martin last week.
