Lady Govs softball rained out at Mercer

MACON, Ga. ? Austin Peay's softball team will have to wait yet another day to open its 2008 schedule, as Friday's opening round of games at the Mercer University/Wingate Inn Classic have been postponed because of rain and wet field conditions.

The Lady Govs were to open the season back on Feb. 20 at home against Kentucky Wesleyan, but that doubleheader was postponed until March 13 because of a winter weather threat in the Clarksville area. Now they face a second delay to the start their season.

“They've gotten a lot of rain here in the last 24 or so hours,” Austin Peay head softball coach Jim Perrin said. “I know they need the rain here with the drought conditions the area has been suffering, but I wish it (the rain) could have waited until after this weekend.”

Weather permitting, and if the Mercer University grounds crew can get the field in a playable condition, the tournament is now scheduled to start at 9 a.m., Saturday, while Austin Peay is scheduled to play at 11 a.m. versus Nicholls State and at 5 p.m. versus No. 15 Mississippi State.

Austin Peay would conclude the tournament on Sunday, with a noon matchup versus the tournament host, Mercer.

A fourth round-robin game scheduled against Western Kentucky has been dropped from the tournament's schedule, as well as the elimination part of the tournament, that was scheduled for Sunday.
