CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay's softball team ran into a buzz saw Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Govs dropped the final two game of its Ohio Valley Conference series to Southeast Missouri 12-0, in five inning, and 9-4, in a game called after five innings because of rain and wet conditions.
Coming off an emotional final at bat victory Saturday, Austin Peay (5-20, 2-8 OVC) was put into a deep, deep hole right off the bat, as Southeast Missouri (15-17, 5-6 OVC) scored nine run in the first inning of the opener and never looked back.
The nine first-inning runs was more than enough for Redhawks starter Elaine Fisher, as the senior left-hander only allowed a walk to sophomore shortstop Ashley Taylor in the bottom of the first and a bloop single to short leftfield by Taylor in the fourth inning.
The Redhawks added two more runs in the fourth ? including one off a double by Katie Otterness? and a single run in the fifth to close out its scoring.
Offensively in Game 1, eight of the nine Redhawk starters collected at least one hit, with Megan McDonald and Stacia Dopudja getting two hits each ? including a double by McDonald -- and Jennifer Vasquez finished with three hits.
Austin Peay had a better start in Game 2, but SEMO exploded for seven third inning runs to take the lead for good after the Lady Govs had taken a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Redhawks, who had four hits in the inning, was also aided in the inning by two walks and two hit batters by APSU starter Meagan Williams.
Allie Borowiak and Vasquez had the two big hits in the third, as they both collected two RBIs each in the inning.
Austin Peay took its only lead of the day in the second inning, as the Lady Govs scored three times, with sophomore Beth Carr and Taylor collecting RBIs.
The two teams traded single-runs in the first inning, as SEMO's Dopudja drove in McDonald, while freshman Ashley Alverson drove in the Lady Govs first run of the day.
Three different Redhawks had at least two hits each, with McDonald finishing Game 2 with three hits. Vasquez and Alex Ramirez had two hit each.
Alverson and sophomore-transfer Krista New had two hit each to lead Austin Peay.
