CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay's softball team was no-hit Sunday in the finale of its Ohio Valley Conference series against Jacksonville State, as the Gamecocks wrapped up the regular-season title with a 13-0 victory at Lady Govs Field.
In fact, Austin Peay (9-35, 3-20 OVC) was just a walk away from having a perfect game thrown against them by Jacksonville State (32-14, 19-4 OVC) freshman pitcher Ashley Eliasson. A leadoff walk to sophomore left fielder Beth Carr in the fourth inning was the only runner to reach base for Austin Peay.
Besides the outstanding pitching effort from Eliasson, the Jacksonville bats came out in full force Sunday, as the Gamecocks scored in every inning, powered by 14 hits ? including six doubles and three home runs.
Things also most got worst for the Lady Govs, as relief pitcher Meagan Williams took a line drive off the wrist in the top of the fifth inning, which first looked like it hit her in the face.
Jacksonville State broke the game open in the second inning, as the Gamecocks ? who were already leading 1-0 ? scored four times in the second inning, highlighted by a home run by Nikki Prier.
That was just the beginning, as the Gamecocks got a three-run homer from Kayla Collins in the third inning and a two-run home run in the fifth from Allie Barker.
Overall, eight of the nine Jacksonville State starters collected at least one hit, with three finishing with two hits and Rachel Fleming three hits.
