Govs' first football scrimmage ends with mixed results

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.?Austin Peay State University's first football scrimmage ended with mixed results, Monday morning.

The 85-play scrimmage, excluding punts and field goals?is one of two scrimmages this week. The Govs will host a scrimmage 5 p.m., Saturday, preceded by a 3 p.m., Governors Club tailgate opened to current and prospective club members.

Officially, the offense scored just one touchdown, although a second would have been recorded had the whistle not stopped play. Governors quarterbacks completed 25 of 40 passes but had trouble executing in the red zone.

Defensively,  APSU brought back an interception (Marvis Malone) for a score and allowed only 90 yards rushing on 45 attempts but allowed the quarterbacks to gain 276 passing yards.  Malone also scooped up a ball knocked loose on a hit by Jay Courtney on Ryan White. However, photos later showed White never completely secured the football for it to be a fumble.

Meanwhile, in the kicking game sophomore returnee Ryan Key nailed a pair of punts more than 40 yards with significant hang time. However, sophomore placekicker Isaac Ziolkowski made just 5 of 13 attempts and APSU mishandled another field-goal attempt snap.

Early in the scrimmage, incumbent quarterback Gary Orr hit senior Lanis Frederick on a post pattern that covered 52 yards down to the APSU three-yard line. However, the Govs failed to execute after that. Orr actually scored?or would have scored?on the ensuing pay after turning the wrong way on a handoff. To avoid quarterback injuries, the whistle blew at the one as Orr fell into the end zone.  Two more running plays were stopped by the defense, setting up a Ziolkowski 19-yard field goal.

Orr, a junior, proved to be the Governors most efficient quarterback on the day, completing 15 of 24 passes?with four drops?for 203 yards. However, he also had the interception that Malone returned.  His favorite receivers were Frederick (2-72), fullback Jontamion Forrest (4-51) and James Feezel (4-25). He also completed two passes for 29 yards to recently turned quarterback-to-receiver Scott Thomas, the second one a 24 yarder.

Sophomore transfer T.C. Jennings overcame a slow start to finish 7 of 11 for 55 yards. He completed four of his last five passes.

Meanwhile, sophomore quarterback Trent Caffee three of five passes for 18 yards.

APSU's running game had its moments with Jeff Lyle breaking free for a 13-yard gain and Otis Spivey for an early 14 yarder.
