APSU student-athletes lend a hand for Operation SERVE

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University student-athletes participated in Operation SERVE, this past weekend. Operation SERVE, sponsored by Grace Community Church, is a one day community service project with over 26 opportunities to better the Clarksville community.

Austin Peay's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spearheaded the Govs and Lady Govs commitment, along with men and women's basketball, volleyball, women's soccer and cheerleading.

“The event was magnificent,” said SAAC advisor and women's soccer coach Kelley Guth. “Our student-athletes really enjoyed having an opportunity to offer our service in this project. It was amazing to see so many people lending a hand and helping others make improvements and repairs to their homes as we prepare for winter. This project was a huge success and I was moved by how thankful the families were for our help.”

The basketball team's worked at the Safehouse, a shelter for battered women and children who have escaped domestic violence. The Govs and Lady Govs assisted in preparing a safe playground for the children, as well as general yard work to beautify the house.

Meanwhile, Lady Govs volleyball pitched in for spring cleaning and painting at Urban Ministries. Women's soccer worked on the Extreme Makeover Neighborhood Edition in the Brandon Hills community doing everything from painting and installing smoke detectors to washing siding and cleaning up the yard.
