BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? For the second straight day Austin Peay's softball team struggled to put things together and dropped its final two games at the Samford University Bulldog Bash Sunday by finals of 6-0 to No. 24-ramked Southern Illinois-Carbondale and 10-1 to Gardner-Webb.
Much like Saturday, Austin Peay (0-4) struggled at the plate collecting only eight hits on the day ? four by junior catcher Daniella Hooper ? while also committing three errors on defense and having its pitcher fall behind hitters for most of the day.
In Game 1 Sunday, the Lady Govs did force Southern Illinois-Carbondale (8-0) to go the full seven innings for the first time in four tournament games, but that was about the only bright spot for Austin Peay, as the Salukis got out to a 5-0 lead after the first three innings and never looked back.
Hooper would have the two of the three hits for the Lady Govs in the opener, with Krista Henke recording the other.
Game 2 Sunday turned ugly early for Austin Peay, as Gardner-Webb opened the second inning with four straight hits off Lady Govs starter Ashley Elrod and finished with six runs in the innings on six hits.
The Runnin' Bulldogs weren't through, as they three more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to go up 10-0.
The Lady Govs would finally score in the bottom of the fifth -- its only run of the weekend ? as Austin Peay got back-to-back out-out hits from Randal Davenport and Janea McCoy, with Brittany Williams driving in Davenport with a two-out single.
Hooper led the Lady Govs with two hits inthe nightcap and six hits overall in the tournament.
Austin Peay is now off until next weekend, when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to play in the Auburn University War Eagle Classic.
