Lady Govs softball drop two close games at War Eagle Classic

AUBURN, Ala. ? Austin Peay's softball team got closer to picking up its season's first win, Saturday, at the Auburn University War Eagle Classic, but still came up short ? including a heartbreaker of a loss in the nightcap ? losing to Auburn 5-0 followed by a 6-4 loss to Purdue.

Austin Peay (0-7) led 4-0 after the first three innings of play versus Purdue (5-4), but the Boilermakers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and four in the sixth ? the big blow coming on a three-run Liane Horiuchi home run ? off  Lady Govs relief pitcher Ashley Bolda (0-5).

Austin Peay had jumped on Purdue early, as it took advantage of two walks and two Purdue errors in the first inning, with sophomore first baseman Tiffany Smith, freshman right fielder Samantha Butts and sophomore shortstop Janea McCoy picking up RBIs for the 3-0 lead.

The Lady Govs would score their final run in the third inning on a bases loaded walk to Detra Farley scoring freshman Catie Cozart, who had reached on a single.

Austin Peay had chances to have an even bigger lead, but left base loaded in both the first and third innings.

In the first game, Auburn broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when Tiger centerfielder Katie Colton hammered a one-out doubled to center and scored an out later on a single by Auburn's second baseman Lauren Guzman.

Austin Peay got its first base runner if the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, when senior third baseman Krista Henke drew a walk. She was pinch ran for by sophomore Detra Farley, who then moved to second on a wild pitch.

That would be as far as the Lady Govs scoring threat would go with junior catcher Daniella Hooper hitting into a fielder's choice, with Farley being put out in a run down for the second out, and sophomore first baseman Ashley Alverson striking out to end the inning.

Only two other Lady Govs reached base in the contest, Butts ? on an error by Auburn's shortstop in the fifth inning ? and junior second baseman Brittany Williams, who walked in the sixth.

Auburn would break the game open in the top of the fifth, as the Tigers picked up three hits in the inning, the big blow coming on a two-run double by third baseman Tatiana Fernandez, making the score 3-0.

Auburn would add two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, as the Tigers collected four hits in the frame.

Austin Peay will conclude play at the War Eagle Classic, Sunday, as it faces Middle Tennessee in a 9 a.m., contest.
