Lady Govs softball lose finale at War Eagle Classic

AUBURN, Ala. ? For the second straight weekend, the Austin Peay softball team failed to pick up a win, as it lost its final game at the Auburn University War Eagle Classic Sunday morning to Middle Tennessee, 11-3.

Austin Peay (0-8) scored in the top of the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead and were tied 2-2 after two and a half innings, but Middle Tennessee outscored the Lady Govs 9-1 over the final three and a half innings to get the victory.

Middle Tennessee (3-7) took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning, as it scored three times to go up 5-2, aided by two APSU errors.

The Blue Raiders would put the game away by scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Things weren't all bad for the Lady Govs on Sunday, as they did get their bats going, collecting a season-high seven hits ? including four by freshman right fielder Samantha Butts ? including her first collegiate home run in the fifth inning.

Butts would hit .364 (4-11) for the weekend, while scoring twice, driving in two runs and stealing a base. For her efforts, Butts was named to the War Eagle Classic All-Tournament team. The only Lady Govs so named.

Butts, who also scored the Lady Govs run in the top of the first, wasn't the only Lady Govs to hit a home run Sunday, as sophomore second baseman Brittany Williams collected an inside the park home run to lead off the third inning, as she hit a slicing line drive down the right field line -- just out of reach of a diving Shelby Barrett. The ball rolled all the way to the right field corner, and by the time Barrett had gotten to the ball and threw it back to the infield, Williams had raced around the bases and slid in without a throw to the plate.

Williams would finish with two hits on the day, with junior catcher Daniella Hooper collecting the other Lady Govs hit ? a single in the fifth inning.

The Lady Govs will return to action, at 3 p.m., on Wednesday playing their first home game of the season at Lady Govs Field, when they host Kentucky Wesleyan in a doubleheader.
