CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.--Austin Peay State University's softball team won its first game of the season Wednesday afternoon at Lady Govs Field taking the opening game of a doubleheader versus Kentucky Wesleyan 1-0, but dropped the nightcap by the same 1-0 final margin.
Austin Peay (1-9) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs, on a infield single from sophomore third baseman Randal Davenport scoring redshirt sophomore Detra Farley, who came in to pinch run for sophomore left fielder Tiffany Smith ? who had opened the inning with a single to right-center field and moved to third on a single by freshman center fielder Catie Cozart.
That run made a winner out of Lady Govs freshman starter Ashley Bolda (1-5), who scattered seven Panther hits, all singles, while walking one and striking out four.
It did look like Kentucky Wesleyan (3-5) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Leah Emmick, but Laura Helms was called out for leaving to early, which kept the shutout going.
Smith would led the Lady Govs in Game 1, with a 3-for-3 effort ? including her first double of the season ? while sophomore shortstop Janea McCoy recorded her first double of the season.
In Game 2, Kentucky Wesleyan scored its run in the top of the first inning off Lady Govs senior starter Ashley Elrod (0-3), as the Panthers collected three of their five hits in that inning, with Emmick scoring on a double by Mariel Hamer.
That would be all that Kentucky Wesleyan starter Haleigh Ashworth would need, as she limited the Lady Govs to three hits.
Elrod would go the distance giving up just the five hits, while striking out four and not walking a batter.
The Lady Govs did threaten twice in the contest, with Cozart being thrown out at the plate to end the second inning and Davenport being left stranded at third base in the fifth inning.
Cozart would collect her first double of the season in Game 2, while sophomore first baseman Ashley Alverson and junior catcher Daniella Hooper had the other two hits in the nightcap.
