Lady Govs softball swept by Mercer

MACON, Ga. ? Not much went right for the Austin Peay softball team on Tuesday, as it closed out its swing through Georgia by being swept by Mercer 6-0 and 10-2.

For Austin Peay (5-14) it was a disappointing end to what had been a solid trip to the Peach State, having gone 4-1 over the weekend at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.

Things went south right from the start of the first game for the Lady Govs, as Mercer leadoff hitter Holly Oglesbee reached on APSU shortstop Ashley Taylor's first error of the season.

That would lead to the Bears (17-9) scoring three unearned runs in the inning, as Austin Peay committed a second error in the inning -- a ground ball to second baseman Brittany Williams ? while collecting two hits.

That would be all that Mercer starting pitcher Jenni Holtz would need, with the lefthander pitching a perfect game against the Lady Govs until the top of the sixth inning, when APSU's Ashley Alverson reached when Bears' shortstop Sara Stukes dropped a popup.

The Lady Govs would collect its only hit of the first game later in the inning on Taylor's single up the middle.

Mercer would add three more unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, aided by a throwing error by Lady Govs starting pitcher Abby Mabry.

The second game started off better for the Lady Govs as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Alverson's third home run of the season ? a two-run shot that following a double by Tiffany Smith to open the second inning ? that lead was short lived.

Mercer would tie the game in the bottom of the inning 2-2, although not without controversy.

Austin Peay looked to have gotten out of the inning still holding a 2-1 lead after turning what looked like a 3-2-4 double play, but home plate umpire Kathy Graff ruled that APSU catcher Daniella Hooper had come off the plate early and allowed the run to count.

That call seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back for the Lady Govs, as they surrender three runs in the third inning ? all unearned -- to go down 5-2 and five more in the fourth for the 10-2 final, because of the eight-run rule after five innings.

Austin Peay will be off until this weekend, when it opens Ohio Valley Conference play on the road this Saturday and Sunday against defending league champion Jacksonville State.
