Lady Govs softball drop finale at Tennessee Tech, 5-2

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. ? Three walks by the Austin Peay's pitching staff opened the door on Sunday for Tennessee Tech, in their Ohio Valley Conference series finale, as those walks played a part in all five of the Golden Eagle runs in defeated the Lady Govs 5-2.

The free passes started right out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning for Austin Peay (6-22, 0-5 OVC), as Tennessee Tech had sandwiched two singles in between two strikeouts against Lady Govs starter Abby Mabry.

Mabry then walked opposing pitcher Holly Thomas on four pitches to load the bases, which was then followed by a slicing line drive single down the right field line by Tech's Katie Betry scoring two.

Tennessee Tech (16-15, 5-0 OVC) would hold that 2-0 lead until the top of the third, when Austin Peay would rally to tie the game at 2-2.

Sophomore Randal Davenport would get things started with a one-out single down the left field line, and after stealing second, scored on a two out double to left field by junior Brittany Williams.

Freshman Catie Cozart would then single into right field and Williams would score when Golden Eagles right fielder Kaleigh Gates bobbled the ball.

Alverson, sophomore Tiffany Smith and freshman Samantha Butts also had hits Sunday for Austin Peay.

Tennessee Tech would answer back in the bottom of the inning, after the Lady Govs had gotten the first two batters out, when Mabry walked the next hitter, which was followed by two APSU errors and then a two-run single by Lacie Coquerille making the score 4-2.

The Golden Eagles would tack on a run in the sixth inning off Lady Gov relief pitcher Ashley Bolda, when she walked Coquerille to open the inning and she scoring two batters later on a double by Whitney Cummings.
