CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Coming from behind hasn't been something that the Austin Peay softball team has been able to do much of this year, but for at least one day that didn't matter.
The Lady Govs posted not one but two come-from-behind victories on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Belmont 5-4 -- in eight innings in game one -- and 9-5 in the nightcap at Lady Govs Field.
In Game 1, Austin Peay (9-24) had to come from behind not once but twice against the Bruins, as it trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. However, sophomore first baseman Ashley Alverson tied the game on her season's fourth home run to lead off the inning.
Belmont (9-15) would respond right away in the top of the eighth, as the Bruins scored twice to go up 4-2, aided by as error by APSU's junior shortstop Ashley Taylor and a base hit by Sammi Parks.
Austin Peay wouldn't quit, despite having its first two hitters go down quickly.
Junior catcher Daniella Hooper would single to drive in freshman right fielder Samantha Butts ? who opened the inning at second base under the international tie-breaker rule ? to make it 4-3.
Junior second baseman Brittany Williams would then double off the left-field fence, moving freshman pinch runner Jessica Ryan to third.
That set up senior designated hitter Ashley Elrod heroics, who looped a single just inside the left-field line to bring in Ryan and Williams with the tying and game-winning runs.
Junior pitcher Abby Mabry (3-6) got the win, pitching the full eight innings, striking out a team season-high 11 batters, while giving up no walks and only five hits.
Austin Peay jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Butts, driving in sophomore left fielder Randal Davenport in the third inning, after Davenport had opened the inning with a bunt single and moved all the way to third base on a throwing error by the Belmont third baseman.
Belmont took a 2-1 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including the go-ahead run on a double by Sammi Parks in the sixth inning.
Austin Peay momentum carried over into Game 2, as the Lady Govs got out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning, collecting four hits ? including a two-run double by Taylor and a RBI single by Hooper.
The hit for Hooper was the 100th of her career, the 24th Lady Govs all-time to reach that milestone.
Belmont would retake the lead in the top of the second, 5-4, by scoring four runs ? aided by three Austin Peay errors.
Austin Peay finally would take back the lead for good in the fourth inning, 6-5, as freshman left fielder Jessica Ryan open the inning with a single to center, which was followed by Davenport drawing a walk and Butts singling to load the bases with no outs. Ryan would score on a fielder's choice by Taylor followed by Davenport scoring on a double play.
Austin Peay would add on to its lead with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth for the 9-5 final.
Elrod (3-5) got the win in relief, throwing six shutout innings, giving up just two hits and three walks. She struck out five.
