WOODSTOCK, Ga. ? Austin Peay's softball team continued its solid play in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic -- despite splitting its two games on Saturday -- as the Lady Govs defeated Winthrop 2-0 in the morning, before coming up on the short end against Western Kentucky in a 4-2 loss.
Austin Peay (4-12) didn't have any letdown from its two wins on Friday, as the Lady Govs jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
Junior Ashley Taylor opened the inning by drawing a base on ball and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brittany Williams.
One out later, Taylor scored on a single to right field by junior Daniella Hooper, as the ball fell in just in front of Winthrop's right fielder Lisa Kingsmore.
That early run would be all that Lady Govs junior pitcher Abby Mabry would need, as the junior college transfer from Volunteer State, shutout the Lady Eagles on five hits.
Mabry also had some key defensive plays behind her, as the Lady Govs had an answer for every Lady Eagles threat.
In the fourth and fifth innings, Winthrop roped doubles early in the innings to set up scoring chances, but the middle infield duo of Samantha Butts at second base and Taylor at shortstop turned line drives into double plays to kill the threats.
Austin Peay would tack on a run in the third inning when sophomore Ashley Alverson hammered a pitch deep over the fence in left field to lead off the inning.
It was her first home run of the season and the second of her APSU career.
Winthrop would mount a final scoring threat in the top of the seventh inning loading the bases, but Mabry induced a groundball to third to end the game.
In its second game, Western Kentucky jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run home run to center by Terri Ellingsworth, with Austin Peay cutting that lead in half on Alverson's second home run of the day in the fifth inning.
Western Kentucky would chase APSU starter Ashley Bolda in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two more runs on three hits to go up 4-1.
Austin Peay would threaten in the sixth, as the Lady Govs scored one run on an RBI single by Hooper scoring Williams, but that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get.
