Lady Govs flat in loss to Morehead State

MOREHEAD, KY. ? Austin Peay's softball team came out flat offensively on Sunday in the finale of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Morehead State managing only two hits in a 2-0 loss.

Despite the close score on Sunday, Austin Peay (12-36, 2-18 OVC) just didn't have the energy level it has shown in games over the past couple of weeks ? even thought there haven't been many wins during that stretch.

The Lady Govs would get its first hit ? and only real scoring chance of the day ? in the top of the second inning, trailing 1-0, with sophomore Randal Davenport picking up a out-out single and moving to second with a stolen base.

Davenport would get to third on a groundout by Catie Cozart, but Tiffany Smith grounded out to first to end the scoring threat.

Austin Peay's other hit came in the top of the seventh on a single to right field by Brittany Williams ? who led the Lady Govs with four hits this weekend.

Morehead State (33-16, 14-7 OVC) didn't hit well either Sunday, as the Lady Eagles only collected five hits against Lady Govs starter Ashley Elrod and reliever Abby Mabry, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first and putting two hits, with a stolen base sandwiched in between, for its second run in the third.

The Lady Govs closes out their 2009 schedule this week with a non-conference doubleheader on the road at Evansville on Tuesday, while hosting OVC foe Eastern Illinois this coming Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series at Lady Govs Field.
