Lady Govs end losing skid with split at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Austin Peay's softball team put to and end a season-long tying eight-game losing streak, by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2, then hung on for a 3-2 victory over Evansville after dropping the opener 5-1.

Ashley Taylor singled up the middle to get things going for Austin Peay (13-37) and moved to third when Evansville third baseman Lissa Fehlman threw wildly to second base on sophomore Randal Davenport's laid sacrifice bunt – which also allowed her to go to second.

Junior Daniella Hooper followed with a 'Baltimore chop' single over the head of Fehlman scoring Taylor with Davenport being awarded home when Aces left fielder Jennifer Stahlhut's throw was high and went into the Evansville dugout giving the Lady Govs a 3-1 lead.

Despite having its first two hitters fly out to left to open the bottom of the seventh, Evansville (13-32) then put together three straight singles – scoring one and having the tying run on third, but junior pitcher Meagan Williams got Kelic Alsip to hit into a fielder's chose to end the game.

Austin Peay had gone up 1-0 in the top of the first with Davenport scoring on a throwing error by Aces shortstop Amanda Ockomon on a steal attempt by Davenport.

Evansville tied the game in the top of the third on a lead-off home run by Fehlman.

In Game 1, Evansville took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the second on a two-out error by Davenport, who misplayed a ground ball by Fehlman allowing Maggie Little to score from third.

The Aces chased Lady Govs starter Abby Mabry in the third then Evansville opened the inning with three straight singles against the left hander with the last by Stahlhut driving in two runs.

Lacey Briscoe would relieve Mabry, giving up a hit and a walk, with the Aces scoring their final run of the inning on a fielder's choice for a 4-0 lead.

Evansville would add to its lead picking up a run in the fourth inning against Briscoe, as the Aces pushed across a run on a bases-loaded walk making the score 5-0.

After threatening in the second and third innings, the Lady Govs finally got on the board in the top of the fifth, scoring a two-out run.

Freshman Jessica Ryan got things started by picking up a two-out single – her second hit of the game -- and after a walk to Taylor, scored on a single down the left field line by Davenport.

Austin Peay had a chance to get even closer in the top of the sixth, as they loaded the bases, but Ryan's sinking line drive into left field was caught by Stahlhut keeping the score 5-1.

Austin Peay will wrap up its 2009 campaign this Saturday and Sunday, as it host Eastern Illinois in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Lady Govs Field.
