Lady Govs hold off late rally by EKU for 4-3 win

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay's softball team withstood a late Eastern Kentucky rally Sunday to salvage the final game of their three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, 4-3, at Lady Govs Field.

Austin Peay (10-26, 2-9 OVC) led 4-1 going into the final inning, but it took a perfect throw from freshman centerfielder Catie Cozart to cut down Amber Lenz at the plate -- who was trying to score from second base -- on a single up the middle by Ashley Dollins on the games final play to seal the win.

Sophomore first baseman Ashley Alverson also threw out a runner at the plate in the seventh, as she cut down Larkyn Wood off a ground ball by Lenz.

Eastern Kentucky (14-17, 5-6 OVC) got their rally going with three straight hits, after Cozart had robbed Diane Gallagher of a hit, with a diving shoestring catch to start the seventh.

Jena Handey would single in Erin Luther to make it 4-2 APSU, while the other Colonels run came on a throwing error by junior shortstop Ashley Taylor on a ground ball by Pam Webber allowing Handley to score.

The Lady Govs took the lead in the bottom of the third 1-0, as Taylor opened the inning by drawing a walk and moved to second on a bunt by freshman right fielder Samantha Butts, with EKU third baseman Shyenne Hussey throwing error.

Taylor and Butts would move the second and third on a throwing error by Dollins, with Taylor scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Tiffany Smith.

Austin Peay would add three more runs in the fourth.

Junior catcher Daniella Hooper singled to open the inning, with freshman Jessica Ryan caming in to pinch-run for Hooper. Ryan later scored on a double off the left field fence by Alverson.

Alverson had two hits to lead the Lady Govs.

After an infield out, Alverson scored from second on a throwing error by EKU pitcher Kalyn Fox on a come-backer by sophomore designated play Detra Farley, making it 3-0, with the final run coming on a double by Butts, scoring Farley.

Eastern Kentucky scored its first run in the fifth inning with Hussey driving in Gallagher with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Eastern Kentucky outhit Austin Peay 11-6 overall, with Cassi Gibson leading the way with three hits.  Hussey and Dollins had two hits each.

Junior Abby Mabry got the win in relief for Austin Peay, going the final three innings, while EKU starter Chelsea Butler took the loss.
