CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois split their Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday at Lady Govs Field, with Austin Peay winning the opener 7-6 -- in 10 innings -- while EIU took the nightcap 11-3, in five innings.
Austin Peay (14-38, 3-19 OVC) would score the winning run in Game 1 on a wild pitch by EIU's Kathleen Jacoby, allowing Brittany Williams to score. Williams had doubled in pinch runner Janea McCoy to make it 6-6, after she had been placed at second for catcher Daniella Hooper – under the international tie-breaker.
Eastern Illinois (25-26, 9-13 OVC) had taken its third lead of the game, 6-5, in the top of the 10th on a fielder's choice by Melinda Jackson scoring Sarah Coppert.
Austin Peay had jumped out to a 3-0 led on the Panthers in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by an RBI triple by Ashley Alverson, which was followed by RBI singles by Catie Cozart and Ashley Taylor.
EIU took the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on five hits, including doubles by Coppert, Hailee Hanna and Hayley Pieper.
The Panther would tack on a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Hanna, making it 5-3, but Austin Peay would tie the game at 5-5 on a two-run double to center by Hooper in the bottom of the fifth.
Abby Mabry got the win in relief for the Lady Govs, while EIU starter Amber May took the loss.
Hanna and Kiley Holtz would collect three hits each in the opener for EIU, with Megan Nelson and Jackson adding two hits each.
Austin Peay was led by Hooper, Williams Cozart and Jessica Ryan, with two hits each.
Eastern Illinois took control of Game 2, right from the beginning, as the Panthers scored two first-inning runs off APSU starter Ashley Bolda – who didn't make it out of the inning – on an RBI single by Holtz and a bases-loaded walk to Hanna scoring Holtz.
Austin Peay would cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, when Williams scored from third on a wild pitch by Jacoby, but that was as close as the Lady Govs would get, as EIU broke the game open with seven third-inning runs to go up 9-2.
Denee' Menzione and Jackson had two-run hits to highlight the inning.
The Panther would tack on two more runs in the fourth – including an RBI single by Pieper – before Austin Peay would score its final two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 11-3 final.
Nelson, Coppert and Jackson would record two hits each for the Panthers in Game 2, while Hooper, Tiffany Smith and Williams had the Lady Govs hits.
Jacoby got the win in Game 2, Bolda took the loss.
