Austin Peay tennis programs add Chicoine as assistant coach

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University tennis programs have added Tom Chicoine, a former All-Big Ten player from the University of Minnesota, as assistant coach, head coach Malik Tabet announced, Wednesday.

“I am extremely excited to have Tom join our tennis program,” Tabet said. “Tom was a successful college and professional player and has the drive and desire to be an even better coach. He's bringing a wealth of experience and will prove to be a great asset for our program.”

Chicoine played at Minnesota from 1996-99 where he held an NCAA ranking as high as No. 16 as a senior. During that year, Chicoine was a Big Ten singles runner-up and earned an automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. He ended his career at Minnesota as the Golden Gophers all-time winningest singles player with 139 victories.

While at Minnesota, Chicoine received the Len Bailey Award for Grit and Determination, along with Louis Ratner Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to Golden Gopher tennis and the Team Spirit Award.

Following his collegiate career, Chicoine played professionally on the ATP World Tour, achieving a career-high singles ranking at No. 255. He played primarily on the ITF Futures Tour – alongside players such as James Black, David Nalbandian, Robert Kendrick and Igor Kunitsyn – where he held a 23-14 record before retiring in 2001.
