CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Morgan Brewer threw a three-hit shutout in her first college start, to lift Austin Peay's softball team to a split in its two games Friday afternoon at Lady Govs Field in the opening round of the Play It Again Sports/APSU Classic, beating IUPUI 7-0 after falling to Northern Iowa 10-0 in the first game.
Brewer, who is from Germantown and played at Houston High School, went the distance giving up just three singles and a walk, while striking out six.
The Lady Govs jumped on IUPUI (0-2) in the first inning, as Brewer's one-out single scored freshman Jordan Cole - who walked - before moving to second on a single by red-shirt freshman Shelby Norton.
Austin Peay would add two more runs after the second out of the inning, when junior Tiffany Smith doubled in Norton and Brewer to make it 3-0 before.
The Lady Govs would add an unearned run in the second inning to make it 4-0, but blew the game open in the third, scoring three more times - including two on a single by junior Randal Davenport and the other on a double by senior Brittany Williams.
Overall, Brewer and Davenport collected two hits each versus IUPUI, while freshman Jessica Chernak walked three times.
In the opener versus Northern Iowa (6-1), Austin Peay was limited to just four hits compared to nine for the Panthers, who got out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play and put the game with a five-run third to go up 8-0.
Austin Peay's best chance to score came in the second inning when Norton and sophomore Amy Mills opening the inning with back-to-back singles, but a double play ended the Lady Govs scoring threat.
Williams and Chernak had the other two hits for the Lady Govs versus Northern Iowa.
The tournament moved to Rossview High School's softball field Saturday with Chattanooga playing Butler in a noon, followed by Austin Peay playing Butler at 2 p.m.
The final game at 4 p.m. will have the Lady Govs squaring off against Chattanooga.
Admission to the tournament is $5.
