CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Austin Peay saw a rally fall short in game one Saturday in the Play It Again Sports/Austin Peay Classic, then have its bats go completely silent in game two, as the Lady Govs dropped a 3-2 decision to Butler followed by a 9-0 loss to Chattanooga.
The Lady Govs (1-3) trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom seventh inning against Butler (2-2), but junior Tiffany Smith led off with a single and moved to third on a throwing error by the Bulldogs shortstop Bridget Paine off a groundball by sophomore Catie Cozart.
Cozart would steal second to get into scoring position, and both Tia Johnson - who came in to run for Smith - and Cozart scored on a one-out double by senior Brittany Smith to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
But that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get, as junior Randal Davenport flied out to left and freshman Morgan Brewer fouled out to third to end the game.
Butler scored an unearned run in the first to take the early 1-0 lead, and then added single runs in the third and fourth innings, both coming on solo home runs by Paine and Meaghan Sullivan respectively.
Sophomore Ashley Bold took the loss for Austin Peay, going 3.1 innings, while giving up six hits and striking out five.
Sophomore Amy Mills led the Lady Govs with two hits.
In the nightcap, thing got bad quickly for the Lady Govs with Chattanooga (6-2) opening the game with five straight hits - including all four batters that Brewer faced, as the Lady Mocs scored five runs in the opening inning.
In fact Austin Peay went through three pitchers in that opening inning versus Chattanooga, as senior Meagan Williams came in for Brewer and gave up two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning, which brought in fellow senior Abby Mabry to get out of the inning.
Smith and Cozart had the Lady Govs only two hits of the game - both coming in the last inning - with freshman Jordan Cole drawing a walk to load the bases.
The Lady Govs would be turned away though, as senior Brittany Williams hit a hard line drive to UTC third baseman Tiffany Baker to end the game.
The Play It Again Sports/Austin Peay Classic concludes today at Lady Govs Field, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. Admission is $5.
