Lady Govs softball held scoreless on first day of Frost Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Austin Peay's softball team had a rough go of it Friday afternoon in the opening round of the University of Chattanooga Frost Classic, as they fell victim to a perfect game in the opener, then were shutout again -- despite outhitting its opponent in the nightcap -- falling to Lipscomb 15-0 and Evansville 3-0.

Austin Peay (3-6) was coming into Friday's games carrying some momentum having swept a doubleheader versus Alabama A&M on Thursday, but Lipscomb (9-1) starter Whitney Kiihnl took control right from the beginning striking out the first four Lady Govs she faced and 13 of 15 for the game.

On the other hand, Lipscomb got its offense in gear quickly, aided by some Lady Govs miscues on defense, with the Lady Bison scoring three runs in the first inning and five more in the second - all unearned - as Austin Peay committed three errors in the first two innings and five total for the game.

Lipscomb would score its first earned runs of the game in the third on back-to-back home runs by Courtney Billington and Kellie Sirus to make it 10-0, with Lipscomb tacking four more runs on in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth for the 15-0 final.

In Game 2, the Lady Govs came out and threaten right away against Evansville (1-1), with junior Tiffany Smith opening the game with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by junior Randal Davenport.

Senior Brittany Williams would then walk, giving APSU two base runners with one out, but a strike out and a pop up ended the threat.

Evansville would score all three of its runs in the first two innings, with a walk and a passed ball helping them out in the first inning.

Evansville would never really threaten after the second inning, as Austin Peay outhit the Lady Aces 7-5 overall, but couldn't come up with a key hit when they had scoring chances in the fifth and seventh innings.

Amy Mills would lead the Lady Govs with two hits.

The Lady Govs continue play in the Frost Classic Saturday, as the square off against Ball State at 9 a.m. and Rutgers at 4:30 p.m.
