Lady Govs softball falls short against Western Kentucky

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Austin Peay's softball team outhit visiting Western Kentucky Wednesday afternoon at Lady Govs Field, but it was the Lady Toppers that found away to push runners across the plate, as the Lady Govs fell to WKU, 4-0.

Austin Peay (5-18) finished with a 6-5 overall advantage in hits versus Western Kentucky, but left seven runners on base - compared to the Lady Toppers four - including leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Western Kentucky (18-9) got on the board in the top of the second inning, off one of the few APSU pitching mistakes on Wednesday, as Lindsey Antone drew a walk from Lady Govs freshman starter Morgan Brewer and two outs later scored on Sara Williams' first home run of the season.

Western Kentucky would score an unearned run in the top of the third - aided by two Lady Govs errors - to make it 3-0.

Austin Peay would threaten in the bottom of the fifth, by getting two runners on base - but the Lady Toppers turned a line drive into a double play to end the threat.

Western Kentucky would score its final run of the game in the top of the sixth when Mallorie Sulaski - who reached on a one-out single - scored off a wild pitch.

Austin Peay would mount a final rally in the bottom of the seven inning by loading the bases on back-to-back-to-back one-out singles by Shine Huwe, Jordan Cole and Tia Johnson - all freshmen - but Western Kentucky pitcher Kim Wagner got the final two outs on a fly ball to left field and a fielder's chose to end the game.

No Lady Topper collected more than one hit, while APSU senior Brittany Williams finished with two hits to lead the Lady Govs.

Austin Peay's next game will be this weekend, as it travels to Martin to play the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
