Rally falls short, Lady Govs swept by Morehead State

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay saw a late-inning rally fall one run short, as the Lady Govs were swept by Morehead State, 8-1 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Lady Govs Field.

In Game 2, the two teams traded zeros for the first three innings before Morehead State (22-16, 12-4 OVC) pushed three runs across in the fourth inning, with the first two coming on a two-out triple to centerfield by Kayla Ashbrook, followed by Sam Woodall single to bring in Ashbrook.

Austin Peay (14-27, 6-10 OVC) would rally in the sixth inning, with Abby Mabry opening the inning for the Lady Govs with a single to left field.

She was replaced by pinch runner Tia Johnson, who moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Randal Davenport.

Detra Farley would reach when Morehead State starter Sarah Funson threw a wild pitch on strike three allowing Farley to reach base.

After the Eagles picked up the second out of the inning, Williams singled in Johnson, with Shine Huwe following with a single to drive in Farley, but that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get, as Alex Gjevre picked up the save by sitting Austin Peay down in order in the seventh.

The Eagles put the first game away quickly scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and added four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Kayla Brill opened things up for Morehead State in the top of the first with her fourth home run of the season, while Ashbrook drove in the other two runs with a single.

That would be all that Eagles starter Gjevre needed, as she held the Lady Govs to three hits over six inning of work, while striking out four and walking one.

In the second inning, Morehead State would record five more hits in scoring its four runs, with Rebecca Butler, Amber Archer and Bianca Cardenas all collecting RBIs.

Austin Peay would score its lone run of the game in fourth inning on Jessica Chernak's first home run of the season.

Morehead State would take on a final run in the top of the seventh inning for the 8-1 final.

Williams and Davenport would also collect hits for the Lady Govs in the opener.
