Notes:
This was Austin Peay's first contest against an FBS opponent
since it lost at Troy State in the 2002 season. It was APSU's first contest
against an FBS member as a scholarship program since the Govs lost at Arkansas
State in 1996.
The 33 points scored by the Governors against Middle
Tennessee were the most against an FBS opponent. The previous high was 26
points against Kansas State in 1987.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Ryan set several career highs in
the game, including TD passes (2), yards (224), and completions (16). His threw
his season's first touchdown pass in the second quarter, a 28-yard strike to
Devin Stark. His second TD was a 19-yard pass caught by Adrian Mines with three
seconds left in the first half.
Freshman cornerback Sheldon Wade grabbed his first career
interception with 19 seconds to play in the first quarter.
The FCS all-time career kickoff yardage return leader,
Terrence Holt, returned a late first-half kickoff 53 yards. Holt finished with
160 yards on six returns.
Ryan White fell just short of 100 yards, finishing with 92
yards on 11 carries. The bulk of that came on a 55 yard, third-quarter, dash.
With sophomore linebacker Zac Burkhart out with torn elbow
ligament and freshman Craig Salley out with a knee problem, the Governors
linebacker corps faced depth problems in only the second game. As a result, two
first-year freshmen Josh Carroll and Josh Owens saw significant snaps in the
first half.
Antwaun Majors led the Govs defense with nine tackles,
including eight solo stops. Amius Smith added eight tackles and three pass
break ups. Jeremy Ross finished with six
tackles and three fumble recoveries, including one for a TD.
Sophomore walk-on receiver Robert Lemon led the Governors
with three first-half receptions. They
were the first career receptions for Lemon, who joined the Govs program in the
spring.
Devin Stark led the Govs receiving corps with four catches
for 63 yards and a TD. Scott Thomas also had four catches for 62 yards.
Head coach Rick Christophel Quotes:
"We got wore out at the end of this one. I mean, 97 plays,
that's unbelievable. We can't play a football game like that. We've got to get
off the field. We did some good things tonight, but there were a lot of third
downs we didn't convert. If we're going to win football games, we've got to
convert."
"I thought for the first three quarters, offensively, we did
a pretty good job at trying to keep them off the field. We converted some
plays, but everything has got to come together."
"These kids are resilient. They don't quit, and they've been
like that since I got here. One thing tonight that hurt us is we made too many
mistakes. One thing we did cut down on was penalties. We still had way too
many, but we'll take care of that tomorrow. We've got to do a better job taking
care of scoring opportunities on offense and on defense, we've got to get off
the field"
"I knew our passing game was there. Jake (Ryan) made some good
throws and we dropped some passes too. There were a couple of times where he
went to the wrong receiver, but we had some guys who stepped up and made some
nice plays. Devin Stark made some nice catches; Scott Thomas, T.C. Jennings and
Ashlon Adams all made nice plays. We've got to get some other guys the ball."
"When you play different teams, they give you different
things. Last week, Cumberland was a nine-man in the box team. This team was a
zone-blitz team. When you go the right place with the ball, you're going to
make some big plays. They give you certain things and you have to adjust."
"I told our guys that I was proud of them. Our young guys
have got to step up; we've got to start challenging on the corners. We've got
four young cornerbacks and I told them I don't care if we get beat or not, we've
got to start challenging. I told them this is a very good team, top-30 in the
country in the preseason. I told them they're close, but they've got to make a commitment
to get better."
