CLARKSVILLE - Austin
Peay State University men's tennis team has added Aleksas Tverijonas, of
Lithuania, to the 2011-12 roster, head coach Malik Tabet has announced.
Tverijonas has fared
well in the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit, building his
ranking to as high as 434, boasting an 18-19 career singles record and a 13-20 career
doubles mark. In his home country of Lithuania, his national ranking currently stands
at eight.
"I'm very happy that
Aleksas is coming," Tabet said. "I really like his swing and he brings a lot of
experience from the international level. He's very talented from the baseline
and he's going to be a great addition to the program."
Tverijonas has
competed in various Lithuanian tournaments where he has earned second- and
third-place singles finishes, as well as capturing a doubles title. At the U-18
level, Tverijonas finished third in the national singles tournament.
A steady player with
a smooth swing, Tverijonas has excelled in doubles. At the 2010 9th
AOTK TwigaCup, he partnered with Julius Gotovskis advancing to the tournament
championship. He teamed with Gotovskis again at the 2010 Nokia Junior Cup where
they lost in the championship match as well.
In singles play, Tverijonas
advanced the semifinals of the TaTs Open, winning a trio of straight-set
matches. He later made a quarterfinal appearance at the Nokia Junior Cup, where
he lost in three sets.
"Aleksas is a
hardworking kid who wants to improve his game," Tabet said. "That's what we're
looking for in this program."
The Govs are looking
to rebound after falling in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship
match to Eastern Kentucky. They entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed after
an impressive season which saw the Govs finish 14-6 overall with a 6-1 OVC
mark.
