CLARSVILLE,
Tenn., Ky. - Sophomore Trey Tarpley, of the Austin Peay men's golf team, has
been named the Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week.
Tarpley
finished third at Kentucky's UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational, Sunday, played at
the University Club of Kentucky's Big Blue Course. Tarpley led the Govs to a
fifth-place team finish.
"We're
proud of Trey and this is a nice award to receive at the start of the year,"
head coach Kirk Kayden said. "He showed that he can play in a clutch situation,
Sunday, he really came through for the team.
His
career-best final-round 67 accounted for a late climb in the standings. Tarpley
opened the final 18 holes with a birdie on No. 1 and made five straight pars
before an eagle on No. 7 put him at three-under par. He made another birdie on
No. 11 and finished the round without a bogey.
Tarpley
opened the tournament with a 73 and shot 76 in the second round. He played an
all-around consistant tournament, but the biggest difference came in his
improvement on the green for the final round. After having 31 putts during round
one and 33 putts in round two, he needed only 25 putts during the final round.
Perhaps
the most important aspect of the weekend was that Tarpley topped every other O
golfer in the field, helping the Govs also to beat the rest of the OVC teams.
