CLARKSVILLE,
Tenn. - Junior Dustin Korte, of the Austin Peay State University men's golf
team, was named the Ohio Valley Conference co-Men's Golfer of the Week.
Korte
shares the honor with Morehead State's Jared Flanery after they finished t-15th
at Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate. Korte's second-round 70 helped the
Govs overcome an eight-shot penalty following a Governors scorecard error. The
mistake had the Govs starting the final round from 16th place as
opposed to fifth.
"Dustin
came up big for us on the final day," head coach Kirk Kayden said. "We needed
that to overcome some adversity after the first round. It was another good
performance in the final round."
The
Metroplis, Ill. native, shot a one-over par 145 for the tournament, helping the
Govs finish ninth overall and top three other OVC teams in the field. In fact,
Eastern Kentucky was the next closest OVC team, trailing the Govs by six
strokes.
Korte's
ability to hit fairways and make putts sparked his climb over the final 18
holes. His play was nearly flawless as hit 10 of 14 fairways and hit 14 greens
in regulation. Korte finished the round with three birdies with his only bogey
coming on the second hole.
"This
is a deserving honor for him," Kayden said. "He was able to close out the
tournament, playing well, on some of the golf course's toughest holes. That's a
good sign for our team."
This
is the second-straight week the Govs have claimed Golfer of the Week honors,
with sophomore Trey Tarpley earning the distinction after the UK Bluegrass
Invitational.
