PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. - Austin Peay men's golf team dropped
one spot to a fourth-place finish at San Francisco's Triumph at Pauma Valley,
Tuesday.
Austin Peay went into the final round tied for third with
a real chance to advance. Things looked good after making some headway over the
first nine holes. Sophomore Trey Tarpley was two-under par after nine, while
freshman Tucker Wallace was at two-over par. It came undone on the back nine,
as Tarpley carded three bogeys and two double-bogeys, while Wallace finished with
two bogeys and two double-bogeys.
"All week the front nine has been the toughest," head
coach Kirk Kayden said. "We had it going on the front today and then lost it
over the back. We lost six shots between Trey and Tucker over the final nine
holes."
The Govs
finished with a three-round 900, tied with Bowling Green, in fourth, 35 shots
behind host San Francisco's pace-setting 865. Central Arkansas shot an 891 to
finish second, while British Columbia came in fourth with an 898.
Unfortunately
for Austin Peay, their tournament-best round was the opener when it shot a 296.
They struggled with the short game for a second-round 305 and improved slightly
with a final-round 299.
Austin
Peay's top three golfers recorded top-10 finishes, in fact, all three tying for
ninth with three-round 223s. Sophomore Anthony Bradley shot 71-79-73, junior
Dustin Korte shot 74-75-74 and sophomore Marco Iten shot 75-72-76.
Sophomore
Trey Tarpley finished 27th with a three-round 231 while freshman
Tucker Wallace came in at 36th with a 234.
"The bottom
line is, we didn't have any one player go low for us," Kayden said. "That hurts
in a field like this. We didn't finish strong like we did last week and we've
got to do better."
