Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Two big innings for Austin Peay proved to be more than enough Sunday afternoon in its Ohio Valley Conference softball game against Morehead State, as the Lady Govs took the rubber game of the three-game series, 7-3.
Austin Peay (9-16, 3-8 OVC) jumped in front right away with sophomore Lauren deCastro hitting her team-leading fourth home run over the right field fence to give the Lady Govs a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Lauren Bradley would follow deCastro's homer with a single, but Morehead State 8-17, 2-8 OVC) starter Katie Pfost looked like she was going to get out of the inning without any more damage being down by getting the next two hitters out.
But sophomore Caitlyn Anderson singled to center field with Eagles centerfielder Elizabeth Wagner missed played the ball allowing Anderson to get to second and Bradley to score to make it 2-0.
That brought up senior Amy Mills, who ripped a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit, driving in Anderson for the third run of the inning.
Morehead State (8-17, 2-8 OVC) wouldn't go away without a fight, as the Eagles put together their only scoring outburst of the game in the top of the third inning, recording four hits and three runs to tie the game 3-3, highlighted by a two-run double by Kayla Brill and a RBI single by Anna Sommer.
The Lady Govs would retake the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring four runs against the Eagles.
Freshman Paige Neely opened the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on a walk to deCastro.
After a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, senior Catie Cozart hit a ground ball to shortstop Kayla Ashbrook, who threw home trying to cut down Neely, but the throw wasn't in time plus it got away from the catcher which also allowed deCastro to score from second to make it 5-3.
Austin Peay was just getting started, as junior Morgan Brewer smacked a double down the left field line, scoring Cozart to make it 6-3, with the final run of the inning coming off the bat of Mills, who flared a single into right field scoring Brewer to put the Lady Govs up 7-3.
Mills led the Lady Govs with three hits and two RBI.
That would be all the runs that Brewer (4-7) would need, as she closed out the game by getting retiring the final nine Eagle hitters in a row to end the game.
Kelcey McMurray (1-3) took the loss in relief.
Brewer gave up five hits and three runs - one earned - in the complete-game victory, recording four strikeouts while walking one.
Austin Peay is off until Thursday, when they host Tennessee State for a single OVC contest at Cheryl Holt Field at 5 p.m.
