CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Despite taking the doubles point to
open play against Lindsey Wilson College, Sunday, Austin Peay State University
women's tennis team struggled in singles play and ultimately fell to the
visitors, 4-3, at the Austin Peay Tennis Center.
The match started promisingly for the Lady Govs, with the No.
1 and No. 2 doubles pairs securing the doubles win. Sophomore Ornella Di Salvo
and junior Andra Cornea won the No. 1 match, 8-1, over Slavica Milanovic and
Sarah Bernos, while sophomores Alison Carre and Vanessa Tavares made quick work
of Rocio Cardo and Laura Vergara, 8-1, in No. 2 action.
Tavares won her third straight match at No. 4 singles later
in the day, a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Bernos. She leads the Lady Govs with three
singles victories during dual action in 2013.
Carre also took the No. 1 singles point, defeating Milanovic
6-0, 6-4. Cornea and sophomore Jovana Karac pushed their opponents to a third
set, but neither could come away with the point to give Austin Peay the
victory.
The Lady Govs will have to put this loss behind them in a
hurry, with a visit from in-state rival Lipscomb, 2 p.m., Tuesday.
