Lady Govs suffer two losses to open road swing

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Austin Peay State University's softball team resent struggles to score runs followed them on the road, Friday afternoon, as the Lady Govs fell in both ends on an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader to Morehead State, by finals of 3-2 and 11-3.

The Lady Govs (18-26, 6-12 OVC) had now lost 10 of their last 12 games – including eight of nine OVC contests—but still sit in the eighth and final slot for a OVC tournament berth with Tennessee State and Belmont also losing two games on Friday.

Morehead State (10-29-1, 5-12 OVC) did all of its scoring in the second inning in Game 1, as it picked up its only two hits of the day versus Austin Peay starter Lauren de Castro to go along with two walks and a hit batter.

Dana Hutchins was hit by a pitch to open the inning for the Eagles, but was erased on a fielder's choice.

But a walk to Karly Thompson followed by an infield single by Samantha Howard loaded the bases with one out.

A strikeout by de Castro (12-11) gave the Lady Govs the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch allowed Jamie Massaro to score the first run of the inning, followed by a Kayla McGuffey walk to re-load the bases.

That brought up Stephanie Etter who ripped a single to center field driving in Thompson and Howard to make it 3-0.

Austin Peay would try to mount a rally in the top of the fourth inning, scoring twice on a two-run double by Kristin Whitmire – driving in de Castro and Laurel Burroughs – but that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get with Morehead State starter Tanna Seuferer (5-13) retiring 12 of the final 14 Lady Govs she faced.

Kayla Davidson would lead the Lady Govs with two hits.

In Game 2, Austin Peay would see the Eagles score in five of the six innings played, as Morehead State recorded 11 runs on 10 hits against two Lady Govs pitchers.

Austin Peay, on the other hand, would only be able to push across three runs on nine hits.

The first run came in the top of the first inning on a double by Davidson – driving in Marissa Lake, who opened the game with an infield single, while the other two runs came in the sixth inning on a two-run single just inside the right-field line by Whitmire.

Burroughs and Whitmire had two hits each in the nightcap.

Austin Peay will continue its Death Valley road trip today; as they square off against Eastern Kentucky in a doubleheader, with a first pitch scheduled for noon (CDT).
