NASHVILLE – A pair of Austin Peay State University student-athletes earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors for their performances from April 14-20. Freshman Alex Robles' one-hitter brought him TSWA Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors, while senior Kristin Whitmire's two-home run game against Eastern Kentucky earned her TSWA Softball Player of the Week accolades.
It's the first weekly TSWA honor for either athlete in their APSU careers.
The honors keep pouring in for Robles after his phenomenal outing at Belmont last Thursday. His one-hit shutout and career-best nine strikeouts against the Bruins earned him adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, as well as a spot on NCAA.com's Top Performers in Week 10 list and OVC Player of the Week from CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Robles' complete-game one-hitter was the first by a Gov since 1997 and the first nine-inning one-hitter since at least 1991. He allowed just three base runners on the day and none after the sixth inning. He's the third Austin Peay freshman to earn TSWA weekly honors this season, joining Ridge Smith (Feb. 18) and Dre Gleason (April 15).
Whitmire hit .500 (5-for-10) last week, driving in eight runs and scoring four. She doubled and scored twice in the weekend-opener at Morehead State, adding two more hits and two RBI in the second game against the Eagles.
The Apison, Tenn., native saved her best performance for last, smacking two home runs and driving in four in the second half of the Lady Govs doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky, Saturday. Whitmire crushed a solo shot in the second and added a three-run blast in the sixth to put the Lady Govs ahead 8-3. She's the first Lady Gov to earn TSWA weekly honors this season.
