MURFREESBORO- On the final day of the Dale Short Invitational, hosted by Middle Tennessee, the Austin Peay State University men's tennis team faced off with Southern Illinois, Sunday, at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, the No. 2 duo of senior Aleksas Tverijonas and sophomore James Mitchell were able to gain their second win in as many days when they defeated Peter Molloy and Daniel Martinez 8-7 (11-9). At the No. 3 position, the team of junior Evan Borowski and sophomore Manuel Montenegro dropped an 8-5 decision to Max Phipps and Ransom Bratten, while the No. 1 tandem seniors of Dimitar Ristovski and Iago Seffrin lost to Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka 8-4.
In singles play, the Governors received their lone victory of the day from Montenegro who defeated Phipps 6-3, 6-2 and improved to 2-1 on the weekend. In other singles matches, Ristovski dropped a difficult straight-set decision to Rigby 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 1 position while Seffrin lost to Alex Pozo at the No. 3 slot 6-3, 6-3.
"It is a very good thing to play quality competition right from the start," said head Ross Brown. "I'm most pleased with our play at doubles. Manuel also played really well, gaining two wins on the weekend. It was a long weekend with a lot of tennis and I'm ok with these results."Â
The Governors stay on the road to take part in the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships which begins Saturday, Sept. 27, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
